The Singing Blue Berries Storm To Victory

As part of Global Enterprise Week (14th to 18th) November we ran The E Factor Sixth Form Business Challenge at Crossley Heath High School in Halifax.  Thirteen teams of ten student were given the task of creating a ficticious new band.  It was a bit like X Factor meets The Apprentice.  They had to produce a business plan, recruit their staff and design a marketing campaign to attract a large fan base and promote their first gig.  Teams had to pitch their ideas against each other in front of a panel of judges to see who they would invest in.  The Blue Berries stormed to victory with a very good sales pitch and even wrote and performed thier own song.  In fact their were 13 excellent pitches and it was very hard to choose the winners.

Each team had the opportunity to work with a Business Adviser from a variety of local companies.  I would like to say thank you to them all for giving up their time to help the students.  The companies involved were: O2, Marshalls, The Halifax, Job Centre Plus, The Redwood Group, The Rotary Club and we also had a number of self employed volunteers.

Crossley Heath must be very proud of their Sixth Form Students.  They were an absolute credit to their school, a joy to work with and I am sure they will all go on to be very successful in their future careers.  Well done everyone.

The E Factor comes to Thornhill

The Community Science College at Thornhill
Enterprise skills are an essential part of preparation for adult life and we run activities to help our students develop key Enterprise/Employability skills. Based on the X-Factor, The E-Factor is a very active, fast paced day which involves teams planning, marketing and promoting a new band. All Year 8 are involved in this Enterprise challenge developing communication, problem solving and decision making skills as they work in their teams. This is active learning at its best and has a very competitive edge. We even had our own versions of Louis Walsh and Tulisa as judges which adds to the fun! The resource pack supporting the day is high quality and includes all worksheets, templates for any letters and an evaluation tool kit. As the day is led by Julie she ensures the event runs smoothly and our school staff and governors act as advisers. To keep costs down schools could run the event themselves, after the initial start up costs, meaning there is no further financial outlay. However we have decided to invite Julie back each year as we think she is well worth the money and helps make this annual event for Year 8 such a success. Feedback from all parties involved-students, Year 8 tutors, Governors and Employers was very positive again this year.

Comments from Year 8 tutors-

‘A really engaging day. The ticket making meant all students were excited and concentrating. This led to excellent team working skills’
‘Very good day – the students were engaged all day and learnt a range of skills’
‘A fantastic day – well planned’
‘Challenging and enjoyable’
‘Great-It broke down barriers. Good employability skills’

Welcome to CLE Blog

Welcome to the new Creative Learning Events blog.  For our first blog we are going to celebrate our achievements over the last academic year 2010- 2011.  We worked with over 60 schools in Yorkshire, Humberside and the North West assisting them to deliver enterprise education and work related learning to over 5000 young people and gave CPD to 40 teachers.  A large number of businesses supported our events by sending members of staff along to become Team Advisers and work with students on our Enterprise Challenge Days.  Continue reading
