What is enterprise?
Where does profit come from?
These are two questions that many students find incredibly hard to answer.
And they are two questions which are fully addressed in The E Factor Enterprise Challenge Day. By the end of the day, all the students will be quite clear as to the meaning of “enterprise” and the source of profit.
What’s more, they will also have gained an insight into such key business issues as planning, recruitment and marketing.
And they will have had a really good time too!
And we have not even started on sales presentations, dealing with the money, spending wisely, production and hard work.
It all comes thick and fast, just as it does in a real business.
The activity
Students (working in small teams) plan and recruit a new band which they then have to market and secure investment for from a panel of Judges. They compete with the other teams to see who can give the best sales presentation using all their marketing materials, skills and talents.
Student learning outcomes
By the end of the day students will have an increased enterprise understanding and capability, as well as greater insight into the workings of the different departments within a business.
Individual skills are identified through participative exercises based on the key enterprise elements of planning, recruitment, marketing, sales, production and profit making.
Each team will prepare and deliver a presentation to an audience to try to win financial investment.
The students will also enhance their financial understanding as they are given a business loan, budget, buy resources, pay wages, produce accounts and make their business profitable.
Employment engagement: working with companies in your area
Students may work in teams with a local business representative who guides and advises students as a further extension of the activity.
There is a free report with detailed information on employment engagement. Email julie@c-l-e.co.uk and we will send you a free copy.
Benefits for schools
Because the programme is prepared and run by the E Factor Enterprise Challenge Day team, this minimises the time you spend organising the day – and frees up valuable teaching time.
Ofsted requirements for enterprise education are achieved, and we will provide an evaluation report as clear evidence for any inspection.
A link with local employers can also be formed as part of the enterprise project.
Here's an overview of The E Factor Enterprise Challenge Day
Exercise 1 - Planning. You have identified a gap in the market for a new band. You must produce a business plan.
Exercise 2 - Recruitment. You must act as a business and put together key criteria for recruiting the band. You will then “audition” the twenty candidates and select your band.
Exercise 3 - Marketing. You must produce the marketing materials for your band to ensure they get maximum publicity, and you also need a range of promotional items to sell at the first concert in order to make some money.
Exercise 4 - Sales Presentations. Two big investors are in town. You will have a few minutes of their time to present your ideas and convince them to invest in your band. Use all your team to impress upon the judges that your band will succeed in a competitive market!
Exercise 5 – Production and Profits. A major problem occurs! You need to save your business from bankruptcy and ensure the concert goes ahead. Can you make enough money to pay the band and make a profit?
At the end of the day students reflect on and evaluate what they have learned and achieved. We will produce an evaluation report for you which you can present at an Ofsted inspection.
