What is enterprise?

Where does profit come from?

These are two of the questions that many KS2 pupils find incredibly hard to answer.

We help them by challenging the pupils to become the agents for a new band.  They have to identify a gap in the market and put together a band that they will launch at a small concert.

Pupils will take on the management jobs in the business and, as a team, select who is the most suitable for each job and give out the job role cards.

The opening exercises

The children have to devise a plan, design a logo, and then recruit the band members, ensuring that the musicians have the right musical abilities and skills they want their band members to have to make the band successful.

Once they have made their decisions they will audition the candidates and select the band. A set of characters will be given to each team to choose from.

Moving on

The children are then asked to produce marketing material for their band to ensure the band gets maximum publicity. They need to make a range of promotional items to sell to the fan club.

In doing this the children look at the price list of suggested items and decide what they can make in the time allowed and how much they might earn. They are given a £20 business loan to budget and buy resources to make the items.

Promoting the band

The pupils have to prepare a two to three minute presentation to sell their ideas to the judges and convince them to invest their money in the band. They need to use all the team to impress the judges that their band will succeed in a competitive market.

They then move on to the concert. Using the money they have already made they hire musical instruments and other props to put on a concert, working to convince the judges that their band is the best.  The pupils become the band!

What others have said

"The E Factor Enterprise challenge was a fantastic experience for the kids in my class.  It gave them a very good insight into the world of business and the different management roles involved.  They really rose to the challenge, having to think really quickly and use their initiative.  The teams loved competing against each other and developing their teamwork skills was a big part of the day.  The finale, the concert, was a real hoot and we all enjoyed watching it. I would definitely recommend a similar day to any year 6 teacher."

- Mr. P Adamson, Year 6 Teacher, Leeds

"Thank you for preparing the ever so fun 'E' Factor Enterprise Day, as everybody enjoyed it so much and will never forget it!  The children who took part appreciate your time of coming down from Leeds and teaching us how business really is in life today. There wasn’t one part of the day that we didn’t enjoy, because you gave us so many activities and new skills to learn.  We thought that the funniest part was when you counted down from five and we all had to run to our seats at high speed before you got to zero. Many of us enjoyed the last moment of the day when we all performed our songs with our groups.

- Year 6 Pupils, Preston Hedges Primary School, Northampton

"Thank you for coming and helping us at our school.  The E Factor really inspired us to think about our future in the business world.  Also we would like to thank you for setting up the enterprise activities.  We really enjoyed: creating the team logos; discussing the team jobs and designing and making all the merchandise.  I don't think there is anything we did yesterday that we didn't enjoy it was all very exciting especially when we dress up at the end and had the big concert.  We really appreciate you coming and we hope to see you again.
